Bit of Everything!

Hey Everyone!

Back on track a little bit today. Things are a bit more ‘normal’ you could say.

I got to get my hands a bit dirty today with some of our hardware in the server room. We are making room for a new setup to allow a mirrored set of servers running virtual servers. We are also making room for a new cloud backup, and a high availability array, to store over 9 terabytes of data. That was sort of fun and scary all at once. We were doing all that in a live environment. If anything was to get unplugged it would could have taken down a server that was currently in use, and mess some stuff up.

We had some left over cookout food from yesterday. That made for a nice lunch again today. I have also been binge watching Dr. Who season 5-11 which is only on Netflix in Europe, I believe. I have a new web browser that I am using. It is called Opera and it has a built in VPN or virtual private network, which makes it near impossible to trace back your location. Since I have mine on Netflix thinks I’m currently in Sweden. Its really cool actually.

I have a Masonic practice scheduled for tonight at 7 pm. We are going to cover the 2nd degree a bit since next week we have to preform one on our newest member. We shouldn’t be too long tonight since we should have most of it down pretty well.

That is all that is going on today! I hope you all have a great Wednesday and I’ll see you again tomorrow! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Lighting Weekend & Golf!

Hey Everyone!

I had a heck of a weekend. Friday my wife said she wanted to replace the kitchen ceiling fans and lights. I didn’t want to do any of that since they all worked, and we don’t have the money for any big issues if they arise.

In the process of taking those two lights down she wanted me to replace the light over the sink, and move the fan in the dining room to the other side of the dining room and get a new light there as well. In total it came to four new lights and moving a fifth. It was a long Friday evening, and it carried into Saturday morning.

This is the fan from the dining room moving to it’s new location.

Here is where it came from. More on this spot later.

The two kitchen lights were here.

5

I installed the lights in the kitchen and my wife painted the ceiling.

Saturday morning kept me busy and I had to stop to head out to the golf outing!

The night before my co-worker and I went to the driving range and hit a bucket of balls.

The weather was great Saturday and my team was ready to do a mediocre job haha. πŸ˜€ Here is my golf cart mate Jake, he works third shift and is the son of the lady in accounting.

10

My dad is hitting here, and then we had another guy in sales on our scramble team.

11

I decided to run to the sports store in town and get a nice shirt, glove, and pants. Lastly before my dad and I headed out we grabbed a split 6 pack for the day.

12

I got home fully expecting to get the rest of the lights up and going. I put the fan up and the new light up, only to find out that they didn’t turn on… :/ I fiddled with the both of them until I had to stop. It was very frustrating.

That took us straight into Sunday where I worked on them again. I stopped part way though because I ran out of knowledge and patience. I called my dad over and we did end up getting the fan working on the switch. I haven’t put it back up because we still can’t get the new dining room light working. It is the only light, that I know of, that is running on the only knob and tube wire run that we have in the house. I have tried every combination that I can think of and something must be disconnected somewhere. Knob and tube wiring is not up to any code anymore because it is not grounded, so I don’t think any real electrician will wok on it without replacing it. That would mean tearing up my ceiling and wall possibly and I don’t want to or have the money to do that. So I have to find someone willing to help me out and until then my dining room will be a mess.

In other news I got work today that I have an interview for my boss’s job tomorrow at 2pm.Β  I may not be posting if I am still preparing for that. I’ll be a bit nervous and figuring things out. It would be a huge leap for me and the job description looks scary but I think I could handle it if it came down to it. Wish me luck! If I don’t get this job which is very possible, I hope to have the ability to move into my co-workers job.

That is all for me today, I hope you have a great Monday! I’ll see you tomorrow or Wednesday! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

What A Weekend!

Hey Everyone!

This has been a quick but full weekend. It was pretty fun, but that always means that it will go to quick.

Saturday morning started very normally. We got up had coffee, breakfast, and watched some local news. Everett was safely playing in our make shift area haha. Don’t mind the dog’s ass πŸ˜‰

All was well and good. Later that day is when it got interesting. I went in to work with my co-worker to replace an old network location. It was out in the shop up on a mezzanine. I wasn’t able to get a shot of it all whole so here is the first one I took.

20180106_134711

Pretty messy right? Ya, we thought so too. Once that was done we pulled it off the wall and that is when the fun began.

Our goal was to make sure that none of the fiber lines broke, make sure we knew where everything was supposed go again, and put it all back together nice and neat in this new rack.

This is when we we getting close to being done. As you can tell it is getting dark. We have the switches at the top and patch panels below that. Further down we have a shelf for out laptop and a new battery backup at the bottom.

I had my co-worker send me a picture once he tidied up a bit. It is all up and running well today.

The reason I had to leave, just before it was finished was because we were celebrating my little brother’s 28th birthday. It was at the local bowling ally, where were had our whole family gathered and ate pizza and wings.

Everett wanted to keep score with my dad and older brother, that is until he ripped the sheet haha.

Notice that the corner of the sheet is gone in the next one and that he seems quite happy with himself haha.

Later, after we played two games the birthday boy and his daughter got to go down to the end of the lane so she could try to hit the pins. The zoom sucks but it was a cute moment. We know the guy who runs the ally so he was cool with it all.

We packed up and went to my parents house where we had ice cream cake from the DQ! That is always a bonus.

Everett was content with a pad of paper. Not sure why he is into such weird stuff.

20180106_201558

That was it for Saturday. As for Sunday we got some work done around the house. I shoveled the side walk. It was a lounge type of day since it was so busy Saturday. I was fine with the day ending like that, but it didn’t. Everett’s cough came on fast and barky. We dropped everything we were doing at about 4:30 and ran him to the local clinic, only to find out that they don’t see children that young. (Side note: That is F*cking stupid) Anyway, we called another clinic about 30 minutes away and were able to get him in there just fine. He has croup again, and they prescribed him a steroid. So great, we thought it would be better from there. It wasn’t, we took him home and gave it to him and he threw up instantly. We tried again after eating this morning and he instantly threw up his whole bottle. My guess is that he is allergic. He is back at the babysitter today and we are going to push through it. I think we go see our new pediatrician in a couple days for a follow up, so I’ll letΒ  you know how that goes.

We slept on the couch last night since Everett went down last night refusing his bottle. We didn’t want to wake him again, for fear of him not going back to sleep. Needless to say, but we are a little tired today haha.

Work is going well, the only down side is seeing the snow piling up today. I’ll have about 6-10 inches to shovel again after work. I try to think of it as a workout haha.

That is all for me, I hope you all had a great weekend. I’ll see you again tomorrow! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Late Night In The Network Closest!

Hey Everyone!

Sorry in advance if you don’t like this type of post, but it is my daily life. This is indeed what happened yesterday. Cleaning up the network closest was the name and game last night.

For a quick and dirty rundown, all companies that have a network have Firewalls, web filters, routers, switches, and servers. Each of these things need ‘plugged in’ somewhere. Most times you end up with a mess like we had. Look below:

1

To be fair we had this looking better until we had one of those switches die on us. We had to scramble a little bit and replace it with a spare and re-plug everyone we could back in. We had to prioritize important things and people first and things got messy haha.

Once we ordered and replaced the dead switch it was time to clean it up! We first had to do some port forwarding on just a couple ports. (each spot that can have some thing plugged in to it, is a port) So you can see we used a service called telnet to do that:

2

You can also see all the cables I made there haha. So time consuming! As professionals with quite a few devices networked, we have an Excel sheet telling us which ones are ‘plugged in’, where they are, what they are, and where they go. That is the biggest factor and making this a smooth transition. Another thing to note is that we had to do this after hours, since everything needed to be ripped out, as shown below:

3

Some of the things still connected above are servers, and a few other things we weren’t sure of at first. they all did get moved around. We wanted less mess, and to be able to attach the wall and door again haha. After three hours my co-worker and I get everything back up and running! And if I do say so myself, looking pretty damn good. With about 8 or so servers, 3 switches, and a few battery backups this is what we have:

4

Once we were satisfied we put the wall and door back on. We also moved the server rack closer so that it looked like normal again. this is a sweet sight!

5

Everything was all buttoned up. For better reference here is a side by side comparison for your viewing pleasure:

6

It was fun getting my hands dirty and getting in there. I’m glad we had to do this.

Tonight we have nothing in store, except for getting groceries and snuggling the baby!

That is all for me today, I hope to see you back again tomorrow! If you have any questions about anything in this post feel free to ask! Bye! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
