Around the Water Cooler!

Hey Everyone!

Yesterday was a sorry, not sorry day haha. I was invited to go to our other building, by a co-worker to have pizza ate lunch. That is something I couldn’t pass up! πŸ˜€ I wasn’t able to post because of it though. 😦

I’m back now though, and the good thing about being around a water cooler vs. coffee talk is that you can have it any time of day haha. So here we are!

Some what of a project summary for me right now would be a few things. I have been roped in to helping a local nursing home extend their network with my co-worker. We went there last night to get the lay of the land. I have spent some time today gathering a list of items that they would want to get as upgrades, as well as drew up their current and proposed network in some free software. If everything gets agreed upon we could be in there getting that project done in a month.

The gas plant project is coming along slowly. I have been ready for a week to do some work for them, and they are in the process of making me a key like I said in an earlier post. I think I have everything I need to map the segment of the network I’d be in and address the gas chromatographer.I really hate that word, it’s to large and complicated haha. Here is the little guy causing all of the issues at that plant:

Here at work we are working on starting out huge ERP upgrade. We are talking a couple milion dollars here. We will be upgrading our current system in its entirety. We are going from a company we have used for over 30 years to a completely different one. It will involve our 4 man department a ton, and will probably take a couple years to implement fully. Yikes! :S

In personal life, I hope to mow the grass tonight. My wife’s friends are coming tomorrow to spend the day and go to the county fair. In the morning tomorrow I’ll be helping build the cabin a bit, I hope to get a few pictures to keep you all updated on that progress as well. πŸ˜€

That is it for me today! I hope you all have a great weekend, and I hope to see you back on Monday! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

New Daycare!

Hey Everyone!

Today is our first day back at a somewhat normal routine. The last two days my mother in-law was at our house watching Everett. Today he started his new daycare! We were nervous just because we hope that he has a good experience.

I was maybe a minute late for work, but they don’t mind because they know I start work early all the time and work through my breaks, when I need to. I dropped him off and met some of the staff. They all seem very nice and I like that he will be in a room with other children his age, most of the day. I know including him there are 4 kids in the 1-2 age range. If they all stay at this daycare they will move through the other rooms together.

I made sure to tell them that he is eating using the baby led weaning technique. Which is that he eats real food in decent sizes, that he picks it up himself and puts it in his mouth. Learning theses skills also helps him with chewing and learning how to swallow better. He has been doing it for a few months and has really started swallowing quite a bit of the food that we give him. There are very few things that they don’t want you to feed them using this technique, so that is nice in the way that he can eat what we are eating.

At this new daycare they have a nap time, I’m not sure how good he will be with this right away. We generally see that he is tired and lay him down. We don’t force a nap on him, so we will see haha.

Like I have mentioned before, they are a 100% legal daycare which is very hard to find anymore. This is great, because the staff is trained and clearanced. We are able to claim the expense on our taxes each year, and they have limits on how many children they can have.

I really hope when I go pick him up that he had a great time. When I dropped him off he was very aware that he was in a new place. But he did stagger over to the one staff member before I left, and wasn’t fussy at all. He has his own little cubby for all of his stuff, they also drop notices and things in there for parents to pick up.

In other news I may be working with a local company in the near future on fixing up their network. I still have to call a few more people and get myself some physical access to the building. A person that works there reached out on an alumni Facebook group, looking for help and I responded so that is that. πŸ˜€ It would be after regular work hours and i would be getting compensated for my time, so if I can help out I gladly will. It would be nice to pick up some side jobs doing consulting and networking.

That is a bout it for me today. I hope you all have a great Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Follow Up Appointment!

Hey Everyone!

I’m back with a little more content than yesterday haha. Last night, right after work, we took Everett to his follow up appointment. Now this was all of our first time going to this pediatrician, so we weren’t sure what to expect.

We pull up, after the 30 minute drive, and see a pretty normal somewhat small building. Once inside it really opened up. That place looked huge! You are met with a large purple waiting room that is divided for sick children and well children, which I though was really neat. They try to take an extra measure to keep the sick kids away from potential healthy ones. The waiting room of course had some toys, but also had neat things like large front wheeled bicycles hanging from the ceiling. Really cool. We registered in no time and went back shortly after. The hallways are lined with life size stuffed animals and more cool things. It was a very open concept of space with most people working right on that large hallway floor. Another thing to mention is that they are open until 8pm that is unheard of where we live. We are able to get out of work make the 30 minute drive and still be there with time for an hour long appointment. We were there an hour, and most times that would bother me, but it was no big deal. It went by in the blink of an eye because the doctor was very engaging and was helping us actually understand what was going on in the body of our child. She was very relate able, with three boys of her own, as well as knowledgeable. I really think we have found our forever pediatrician.

On to his appointment! We were told he is still breathing fine and that his croup seems to be getting better on its own, which is great. Once we told them that he wasn’t taking his steroids because he was throwing up she said not even to bother with them. Fun fact, I guess those steroids could stunt his growth, which we were unaware of. He is already going to be a shorty, we don’t need to aid that haha. To our surprise she did see that he may have an ear infection starting so she got us an antibiotic. Since Everett tends to get yeast infections while on antibiotics they gave us some sample boxes of probiotics to see if that would help stop the yeast infection. Again everything was just so well delivered that we didn’t even realize we were there so long. We also had them check him for the flu and RSV, both came back negative so we were good there too. πŸ˜€

Today he is back at the babysitters so we will see how that goes. I have been pretty busy at work today, unlike yesterday. We have had a printer that just up and stopped working. It is networked in and just quit. We have two patches, one on each end and a full run from the wall by the printer to the patch panel. That makes for 3 lines to test. Well….all the lines except the run tested fine, so we got out the super detailed testers and tested the whole thing again. this let us know that approximately 318 feet in on the orange wire there was a disconnect. Once finding that we took a shot in the dark and cut a particular section that could be the problem area and made new ends for the cable. Sure enough it worked. So we are back up and online with that printer. Time spent was probably 2 hours this morning. It feels good to get some really troubleshooting in.

Today was my pay day! Woo, that is until I realize it is all gone 😦 I paid off most of my bills, then my student loans, Everett’s college fund, my retirement, and have about 20 bucks for gas. R.I.P. my pay check, gone too soon. XD XD

That is about it for me today. I hope you all have a great hump day, and I’ll see you again tomorrow! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

What A Weekend!

Hey Everyone!

This has been a quick but full weekend. It was pretty fun, but that always means that it will go to quick.

Saturday morning started very normally. We got up had coffee, breakfast, and watched some local news. Everett was safely playing in our make shift area haha. Don’t mind the dog’s ass πŸ˜‰

20180106_102343

All was well and good. Later that day is when it got interesting. I went in to work with my co-worker to replace an old network location. It was out in the shop up on a mezzanine. I wasn’t able to get a shot of it all whole so here is the first one I took.

20180106_134711

Pretty messy right? Ya, we thought so too. Once that was done we pulled it off the wall and that is when the fun began.

20180106_142236

Our goal was to make sure that none of the fiber lines broke, make sure we knew where everything was supposed go again, and put it all back together nice and neat in this new rack.

20180106_172932

This is when we we getting close to being done. As you can tell it is getting dark. We have the switches at the top and patch panels below that. Further down we have a shelf for out laptop and a new battery backup at the bottom.

I had my co-worker send me a picture once he tidied up a bit. It is all up and running well today.

signal-2018-01-06-181528

The reason I had to leave, just before it was finished was because we were celebrating my little brother’s 28th birthday. It was at the local bowling ally, where were had our whole family gathered and ate pizza and wings.

Everett wanted to keep score with my dad and older brother, that is until he ripped the sheet haha.

20180106_181731

Notice that the corner of the sheet is gone in the next one and that he seems quite happy with himself haha.

20180106_183907_001

Later, after we played two games the birthday boy and his daughter got to go down to the end of the lane so she could try to hit the pins. The zoom sucks but it was a cute moment. We know the guy who runs the ally so he was cool with it all.

20180106_194506

We packed up and went to my parents house where we had ice cream cake from the DQ! That is always a bonus.

20180106_201553

20180106_201618

Everett was content with a pad of paper. Not sure why he is into such weird stuff.

20180106_201558

That was it for Saturday. As for Sunday we got some work done around the house. I shoveled the side walk. It was a lounge type of day since it was so busy Saturday. I was fine with the day ending like that, but it didn’t. Everett’s cough came on fast and barky. We dropped everything we were doing at about 4:30 and ran him to the local clinic, only to find out that they don’t see children that young. (Side note: That is F*cking stupid) Anyway, we called another clinic about 30 minutes away and were able to get him in there just fine. He has croup again, and they prescribed him a steroid. So great, we thought it would be better from there. It wasn’t, we took him home and gave it to him and he threw up instantly. We tried again after eating this morning and he instantly threw up his whole bottle. My guess is that he is allergic. He is back at the babysitter today and we are going to push through it. I think we go see our new pediatrician in a couple days for a follow up, so I’ll letΒ  you know how that goes.

We slept on the couch last night since Everett went down last night refusing his bottle. We didn’t want to wake him again, for fear of him not going back to sleep. Needless to say, but we are a little tired today haha.

Work is going well, the only down side is seeing the snow piling up today. I’ll have about 6-10 inches to shovel again after work. I try to think of it as a workout haha.

That is all for me, I hope you all had a great weekend. I’ll see you again tomorrow! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Little Of This, Little Of That!

Hey Everyone!

We have made our way to Thursday. One step closer to the weekend, and that I can get behind. Yesterday was another so-so day with not much going on. I have been working towards a certification in penetration testing from cybrary.it There are all sorts of courses offered and tons for free! If you are interested in anything computer or networking related that seems to be one of the best, for free that is.

Our baby boy is still hacking and coughing. It is not fun to watch or to deal with. There really isn’t anything that we can do except wait for it to get better. He seems miserably and he probably is. He is on the up and up and is still smiling and playing. He try to bundle him up when he goes outside and keep him hydrated the best we can. He is still only on breast milk so he hasn’t been introduced to water or juice yet. I feel like the milk is not great mixed with mucus from my own perspective and that water would be better but he still needs the nutrients from the milk. It just sucks that he is still so young. Not much can be done. We will wait it out.

Today my boss brought in his deer meat from the buck he got the other week. Fresh venison is amazing! When it is then processed into sticks and bologna it can be even better, if done correctly. I’m not sure if I will have any luck hunting this year or not. The reason for this being, that I may only go out one day, since I am out of time to take off of work. I might go out twice depending on what happens and the weather. We hunt on my dads land nowadays, and hope to have some place to sleep up there. I hope there is some snow come rifle season so that the contrast is easier to see, and trails are more easily followed.

Tomorrow I am going to look at a used snow blower up on the hill. I will swap my car with my dad’s truck so that after work I can just go right up and check it out. I have the money in hand and may very well have a cheaper solution than I thought I would for the winter season.

That is about all that is going on with me lately. I am also waiting on the plumbing company to get to me. I may have to call them again, I feel like they have forgotten me. rip. Oh well! Have a great Thursday and I’ll try to remember to have a ‘Coffee Talk’ tomorrow morning. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Who Are Your Favorite YouTube Creators?

Hey Everyone!

As nothing exciting went on last night I thought it would be neat to see what creators, if any, you watch on YouTube. With the way of the internet being a daily mainstream medium for people to receive everything from news/entertainment to shopping and social media, I wonder who your go to creators are.

If you get your news or entertainment else where let me know that too! I get most of my news and entertainment from YouTube, as it is a huge platform. I will have links to every channel that I mention if you would like to check them out! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

images

By far my favorite YouTuber is Philip DeFranco. I have followed him for about 10 years now, and he has continued to grow in his field as I have grown into adulthood. He puts out a daily news segment, a weekly round up on Fridays, and has a whole separate channel for his staff. That second channel is under PhillyD, his staff is amazing and that channel is all for good times and laughs.

mcm___car_throttle_ama_q_a_feb-55365c05f2d0e.jpg

I also love watching people who modify cars. There is a channel called Mighty Car Mods, and they are a duo from Australia. Marty and Moog buy old beaters and modify them for track use and all sorts of nonsense. Plus they sound cool haha.

maxresdefault.jpg

Since I play Rocket League all the time, I like to find a creator that puts out fun content of game play as well as game news and update stats. I have hit the jack pot with this and watch Jon Sandman. He is friends with pro players, plays modded maps, keeps up to date with news, does crate battles, trade up videos, and has a great personality. He also just became a dad and bought a house!

I watch Joe Robinet, and Mike from MCQ Bushcraft for all of my camping/bushcrafting information. They both teach classes as well as do over night camps, build shelters, and do other, longer camp videos like week long canoe trips.

For cooking related I watch the one and only Binging with Babish. He recreates meals shown in TV shows and movies, as well as a series on basic cooking techniques. He does it all from his little apartment in the big city and he has a voice that keeps you coming back for more.

To round it out and keep my post short-ish, for tech news and what not I watch Linus Tech Tips, Tech Quickie, Carl Oliver, and Eli The Computer Guy.

I hope you take the time to visit these channels if any of them interest you. Please comment below telling me who you like and watch daily. Maybe we can exchange our favorites and get each other hooked! πŸ˜€ Have a good day! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Late Night In The Network Closest!

Hey Everyone!

Sorry in advance if you don’t like this type of post, but it is my daily life. This is indeed what happened yesterday. Cleaning up the network closest was the name and game last night.

For a quick and dirty rundown, all companies that have a network have Firewalls, web filters, routers, switches, and servers. Each of these things need ‘plugged in’ somewhere. Most times you end up with a mess like we had. Look below:

1

To be fair we had this looking better until we had one of those switches die on us. We had to scramble a little bit and replace it with a spare and re-plug everyone we could back in. We had to prioritize important things and people first and things got messy haha.

Once we ordered and replaced the dead switch it was time to clean it up! We first had to do some port forwarding on just a couple ports. (each spot that can have some thing plugged in to it, is a port) So you can see we used a service called telnet to do that:

2

You can also see all the cables I made there haha. So time consuming! As professionals with quite a few devices networked, we have an Excel sheet telling us which ones are ‘plugged in’, where they are, what they are, and where they go. That is the biggest factor and making this a smooth transition. Another thing to note is that we had to do this after hours, since everything needed to be ripped out, as shown below:

3

Some of the things still connected above are servers, and a few other things we weren’t sure of at first. they all did get moved around. We wanted less mess, and to be able to attach the wall and door again haha. After three hours my co-worker and I get everything back up and running! And if I do say so myself, looking pretty damn good. With about 8 or so servers, 3 switches, and a few battery backups this is what we have:

4

Once we were satisfied we put the wall and door back on. We also moved the server rack closer so that it looked like normal again. this is a sweet sight!

5

Everything was all buttoned up. For better reference here is a side by side comparison for your viewing pleasure:

6

It was fun getting my hands dirty and getting in there. I’m glad we had to do this.

Tonight we have nothing in store, except for getting groceries and snuggling the baby!

That is all for me today, I hope to see you back again tomorrow! If you have any questions about anything in this post feel free to ask! Bye! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Low Key Night

Hey Everyone!

Yesterday, after work, we headed to the doctor’s office for our baby’s four month checkup. He is still small in stature only being in the 23rd percentile in height and 8th percentile in weight. Of course he is only four months old so not really a big deal. He also had to get a couple shots in his legs. He tends to scream bloody murder for about 20 seconds then he is OK again lol.

Afterwards we got home and cleaned up a bit around the house. My friend from grade school came over for the first time since we bought our house. He is working in town again so we had to catch up. I showed him around and we just talked for a while. He is staying at his parents house while his wife stays in the city, where they reside. It was great to have someone over and break the norm a bit.

Early this morning my boy woke up in, what would seem like, pain. We assume it was from his shots, so we got out the infant Tylenol. He went back to bed so that is a plus! πŸ˜€

Here at work today I will be staying late. We are doing the tidying up of the server room. I have spent a couple days making Ethernet cables to the correct length. About 40 or so, which if you don’t know the process can take a toll on your fingers. I’ll post a video below if you feel inclined to know more.

I have the exact same cable tester, and when you use it they should all light up green in the correct order. It is simple, but it is tedious and making that many takes a while. I’ll take pictures if I can to show before and and after.

That is all for now! I’ll see you all again tomorrow! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Cable Work, Birthday, Home Coming!

Hey Everyone!

It has been a nice slow day here at work. In a way I enjoy it and in a way it makes the day drag on.

Tomorrow will be a different day. I have 30 patch cables that need ends. That means 60 ends total, possibly more. We are cleaning up our server setup so it no longer looks like a rat’s nest from the switch dying. Again most likely tomorrow we will work on the new set up for the conference room on the second floor. We have 4K TVs and all sorts of goodies going into that room.Β  This should keep us quite busy for a little while.

I was unable to mow the lawn last night due to my wife getting out of work a bit late. I wasn’t able to watch the baby and mow haha. I am hoping that she will be home before me today so I can get right to it. It isn’t fun to cut grass when it it over 80 degree and humid, from all the hurricane rain leftovers. But, it must get done, so I’ll do it!

Friday is also the day my mother was born all those years ago! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ haha Jokes aside we are going to all go eat at a place of her choosing. That is a tradition in my family since as long as I can remember. Fingers crossed that my baby will behave haha.

I was able to book my hotel for my universities home coming events. We go back most every year to see friends and watch the parade and what not. We met in college and we love the town the university is in. If we had it our way we would live there. Thankfully we are only about an hour and a half away, and can visit when ever we want. There may be pipe dreams of the future of buying a lake house out there but we will have to wait and see if that ever becomes a reality.

That is everything from me today, I hope you are enjoying your week day slide into the weekend! I’ll see you all back again tomorrow! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Poor Baby, Pellet Stove, & Dead Switch!

Hey Everyone!

Yesterday was going to be a lazy day full of rest. Well, that wasn’t the case. We all have head colds and we found out that little Everett has an ear infection. He is doing better now and is on antibiotics.

After his doctor appoint I had a fire lit under my ass, for whatever reason. I wanted to move my treadmill to the curb and give it away, as well as dismantle my pellet stove setup and get it out to the garage. I’m in the process of selling it for some cash to either finish up the garage or get bookshelves made.

I had my brother coming to help me, and before he got there I took the treadmill out and had it on the curb. he saw it and asked why I was giving it away, and if it worked? I told him we didn’t use it or have space for it, and yes it worked. He pulled right in and we loaded it in his truck. haha His broke and he hasn’t had one since, until now lol.

Once that was done we started to dismantle the pellet stove. Here is the removal of the intake hose from the outside of the house:

20170911_135138

Next was taking apart the exhaust pipe from the outside.

20170911_135144

Then the inside, of course. Sorry for the bad picture, We were busy.

20170911_140155

Once we removed the piping we took the sheets of wood off. This was an old window so it is window sized lol. We needed to make sure to patch this all up so we didn’t just have a huge hole into our basement. We placed OSB on the inside, and put better plywood on the frame. I then painted it with outdoor green paint to match the rest of our basement trimmings.

20170911_160536

Then it was on to the inside. We dropped the treadmill off at my brothers house and grabbed some insulation from his attic.

20170911_161359

Once it was cut to size we stapled it in place.

20170911_161646

With the remaining pieces of ‘good’ plywood we covered the inside and there it is!

20170911_164213

It is now well insulated and good to go. We moved the 330+lb stove into the garage and I posted it for sale in four different garage sale groups in the area. I am hoping to get it moved out quick so we can move on to other projects.

His is a picture of my little buddy not feeling well. He is feeling much better with three doses of antibiotic in him.

20170911_194115

Late last night I received a text from my co-worker telling me that in the afternoon, once I left, that our switch died. This is a pretty big deal. All network traffic that would be going though that switch no longer could. That included our data collection system, no bueno!

So once I got to work today we had our hands full. Here is the mess we had make to re route everything, fun huh?

20170912_074856

Looks like a rats nest. Once we are all done we hope to get it organized again. We have a switch that should be delivered today so we can configure it and set everything back to the way it was.

We also had our health screening today at work and even though I have lost 40+ lbs I still have higher cholesterol GRR! What does a man have to do! I took out a ton of carbs and watch all of my diet. At this point I’m sure it is just genetics. Oh well, we all die someday , right?

That is all for me. I hope I feel better today at some point, my head feels like it is in a fish bowl. I’ll see you all tomorrow! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
