Welcome back everybody.
Yesterday after work I looked up in the sky and saw a few gray clouds and a few patches of bright blue. I decided I would head back out to my site and see what I could get done. If I got rained on then so be it. Again I ran home and changed, fed the animals, and put some dishes in the dishwasher. That quickly got my husbandly duties going. I as at my camp site by 5pm and everything looked good. I decided that I wanted to have all the roof poles cut and processed. I have nine total, one of which is bigger than the others right in the middle. This like I said before will hopefully raise the middle of the structure a tad so that water will fall off at an angle and not directly into my fire place. I added two more posts to the back and lashed them into place, making the back crossbeam very sturdy. While I was there I was also able to lash the outer poles and the big middle one. This required square lashing at the back and up at the front. I have been collecting the tops of the trees that I cut down so that I can keep using them as I go. I will need many branches to make weaved walls and most posts. I lowered the mantle stone so that it isn’t directly on the back crossbeam. This is so that when water does roll of the back it wont create a puddle that my beam is in. Being wood and all it would rot very fast. My goal next time I go out is to lash the remaining six poles at the front and back. I would also like to fasten my tarp over them, as well as put a few more posts into the back wall. These posts won’t need to be lashed since they aren’t structural. They will just help in the weaving portion of the wall making. Just to make sense of all of it, after I am done with the back wall and I get the tarp up I will still have to cover the top with branches, make the side walls, make the beds, and finish making the fireplace. There is clearly still a ton of work that needs to be done. I would like to have my brother come out and help me one day just to see how much we could get done together. With his help I feel like I could have it finished in a full day.
After work today I have minimal time to get stuff done. At 5:40pm my uncle is picking my dad and I up ad we are going out to eat before our Masonic initiations. My cousin is one of the new members and my grandfather is in town to watch. We are going out to eat at a restaurant near the lodge and will just all meet there at about 6pm. I have never eaten there before so I hope their food is good. Not that I’m picky in anyway, but I’m just a fan of good food. We have two initiations tonight so it will be a long night. That’s about all I can say about it. Secret, secret I know sorry.
Last night I tried my hand at making a campers favorite recipe. I made bannock for the first time. I wanted to try it to see if I would like it and if I could cook it in the wild. It is super easy and depending on how you make it, it can taste great. I made mine like this:
1tsp Baking Powder
*Mix then add water to get a doughy consistency*
Heat pan with oil
Fry on medium to medium high heat until edges brown up a bit*
Then flip and do the same on the other side
Now with bannock it is bad luck to cut it, so you have to tear it. It is also custom to give guests the first piece before you have one your self. This recipe is a little sweeter than traditional bannock and I like it that way. You can make it with out the sugar, or you can put other berries in it, it is all up to you. The best part is that you can take all the dry ingredients pre-mixed in a plastic bag with you and all you have to do is add water and cook for a good, quick meal. It doesn’t have much in the way of nutritional value but it sure as hell will fill you up. I had some left over from last night that I finished today. The outer sides are supposed to crispy up and be a little hard as well so don’t think you messed it up if that happens.
On another quick note I want to start recording when I play games and add some videos to my YouTube page. If I do that I’ll let you know where to find them. Ooo and I may get an old server from work and make a file server for my house. Just fun to know.
I hope you all have a great hump day and I’ll see you tomorrow! 😀
